The Law Foundation of Ontario recently launched two calls for applications for two new granting opportunities. Both calls are for one-time project funding and both are open to University researchers and nonprofit organizations that work to improve access to justice for the people of Ontario.
Measuring Impacts and Progress
The purpose of the Measuring impacts and progress grant is to support empirical research that will help improve how the justice system serves the people of Ontario.
The Foundation is aware that several definitions of empirical research/investigations exist. As a general matter, we are looking for research that is based on observed and measured phenomena and derives knowledge from actual experience rather than from theory or belief. Tied into the idea of empirical research is the scientific method of working or testing a hypothesis through observation and experiment. Empirical investigations use quantitative data, which is when you analyze numerical data, or qualitative data, which is when you use non-numerical data such as observations and interviews.
Eligibility: University Researchers; Nonprofit organizations who benefit the people of Ontario
Grant amount:
Small grant – up to $25,000
Large grant – Between $50,000 and $100,000
Deadlines:
Faculty Research Office: 1 week before agency deadline (2-3 weeks before if you wish to have feedback on your application – send to Karen Kueneman)
Research Development & Services: At least 5 days prior to agency deadline

Justice and Technology Research
The purpose of the Justice and technology research grant is to gain a better understanding of the practical ways in which technology is, or could, potentially change how legal services are provided, and to support access to justice for people with legal needs. The Foundation is open to various research approaches as part of this call.
Eligibility: University Researchers; Nonprofit organizations who benefit the people of Ontario
Grant amount: Up to $100,000
Deadlines:
Faculty Research Office: 1 week before agency deadline (2-3 weeks before if you wish to have feedback on your application – send to Karen Kueneman)
Research Development & Services: At least 5 days prior to agency deadline
