Workshop: Writing in the Age of Distraction

Do you struggle to find the focus you need to think and write?

The 21st-century professor has to manage:

  • the constant barrage of emails;
  • the unending needs of students, colleagues, and family members;
  • the distractions of social media and the web;

…and still somehow produce compelling work.

Does it sometimes feel like you could only really think clearly if you were far from your computer and all the people who need you, on a desert island or in a cabin in the woods?

If you could use some new strategies for clear thinking on a daily basis in the real world, please join us for a brainstorming workshop on Friday March 1, 2:30-4 p.m.

As the date of this workshop is soon, please register here (click on workshop tab) by the end of Reading Week – February 24.

Format

  1. Share strategies we each have used to find a clear, non-distracted headspace to think and write;
  2. Discuss the merits of strategies proposed by writing experts; and
  3. Each of us will then create our own, individualized set of strategies to try to find ourselves a cognitive cocoon on a consistent basis.
