Foundation for Legal Research

The goal of the Foundation for Legal Research is to encourage legal writing that will be valuable to Canadian lawyers, notaries and judges in their day-to-day work in the law and to the administration of justice.

Description: The Foundation for Legal Research provides funds for legal research falling into three broad categories:

  • Research and writing where the emphasis is on the statement of existing rules of law, sometimes referred to as doctrinal research;
  • Research with regard to the working of the legal system; and
  • Research with regard to development in fields peripheral to legal doctrine, such as criminology, psychology, psychiatry, sociology and economics and their relationship to rules of law.

Deadlines:
Faculty of Law Research Office: 5 days before the agency deadline (1-2 weeks before if you wish to have feedback on your application – send to Karen Kueneman)
Research Development & Services:
At least 5 days before the agency deadline.

Amount:  $5000
In addition, up to 2 major grants in the amount of $10,000 will be awarded for research projects in the field of public law (including but not limited to constitutional law, administrative law, municipal law, criminal law, aboriginal law and public international law)

Eligibility: research funding is available to jurists and law teachers in Canada.  A Principal Investigator (PI) must be eligible to hold a research account at Western.
