These awards provide support to scholars of exceptional ability who are engaged in research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. They are intended for established scholars who have demonstrated outstanding research ability and who have published the results of their research in substantial publications in their field. Typically, the recipient of a Killam Research Fellowship is a full professor at a Canadian university. Fellowships are awarded annually, on a competitive basis, to researchers in any of the following fields: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering, studies linking any of the disciplines within these fields. 

Amount: The fellowship provides two years of release time (valued at $70,000 per year).

Application Process: Applications must be submitted by individuals, and not by their institutions (however, applicants must obtain institutional approval). The application must present a coherent project with a clearly stated objective and a well-defined plan for reaching that objective. The award is not intended as a subsidy for the overall research.

A full application will consist of the following:
1. A completed online application form, including:

• description of present/projected teaching load, as well as your load from the past two years;
• intended period and location of fellowship tenure;
• details regarding any co-investigators on the project;
• one-page non-technical project summary;
• six-page detailed project description (plus optional one-page bibliography);
• current CV (maximum 30 pages using Canada Council template);
• list of your five most significant research contributions.

2. Three letters of reference from Canadian or international specialists – sent directly to killamevaluations@canadacouncil.ca
3. Original signed cover letter (generated at the time of online form submission)
4. A copy of proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency (for permanent residents: a letter from your institution confirming a firm appointment)

Eligibility: To be eligible, applicants must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Deadlines:
Monday, May 18, 2020 – Draft application packages must be submitted online for institutional (Western) approval. If your application is approved, you must submit your supporting documents. Western must authorize final submissions in advance of the Canada Council deadline.
Monday, June 1, 2020 – The Canada Council for the Arts deadline – the Council will not accept supporting documents postmarked after June 1, 2020.
