The 2023 Insight Development Grants (IDG) funding application is now available.

Description: Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects, of up to two years, proposed by individuals or teams. Insight Development Grants foster research in its early stages, and are not intended to support large-scale initiatives.

Deadlines:
January 12, 2023: Draft of proposal due – the Research Officer will facilitate an internal peer review if you meet this deadline
January 19, 2023:
Faculty deadline – full draft proposal (will be reviewed again by the Research Officer)
January 19, 2023, 10:00 am: submit ROLA, full application and CCV(s) in Research Portal -application goes to Research Services (can request to have application returned to you)
February 2, 2023 10:00 am: SSHRC (results available by June 2023)

Amount: $7,000 up to $75,000 (for one – two years)

Eligibility: Both emerging and established scholars who are affiliated with an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution are eligible to apply. A Principal Investigator (PI) must be eligible to hold a research account at Western.

  • Emerging scholars -to develop new research questions and/or approaches. Such projects may build on and further the applicant’s (or team’s) graduate work and/or represent a continuation of their overall research trajectory.
  • Established scholars: Funding for established scholars provides support to explore new research questions and/or approaches that are distinct from the applicant’s previous/ongoing research. Research projects should be clearly delimited and in the early stages of the research process. Insight Development Grant funding is not intended to support ongoing research for established scholars.

Applications: The IDG application form is available via the Research Portal.

Please contact Karen Kueneman, Research Officer if you plan to apply.

NOTE: This competition uses the Canadian Common CV (CCV). Applicants and co-applicants are encouraged to complete their SSHRC CCV as soon as possible (CCV instructions). Applicants should expect that creating a SSHRC CCV for the first time will require a significant time investment.

NEW: Please note that researchers who are working in interdisciplinary research may direct their application to a committee with expertise from across the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health sciences – the Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee (TAIPR) – for review. For information, please visit the committee webpage Tri-Agency Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee.
