Mitacs’ mission is to advance vital research, create economic impact, and drive innovation in Canada by building collaborative partnerships between the private, public, and postsecondary sectors.   

In the current economic and labour market landscape, demand has never been higher for Mitacs’s programs across the country – they have seen an unprecedented volume of funding applications to date this fiscal year.   

In Ontario, they have seen a particularly exceptional uptake of programs combined with lower-than-expected provincial funding. This means that funding available for this fiscal year in Ontario has been utilized. As their model relies on provincial funding to deliver the programs, the funding gap in Ontario is causing uncertainty.   

To ensure that they operate responsibly, Mitacs will be pausing Ontario submissions until they have clarity around provincial funding going forward. This means that, out of an abundance of caution, all new applications for Accelerate, Business Strategy Internship, Elevate, and international programs will be paused in Ontario as of August 28, 2022. Projects reviewed and approved up to and including that date will be honoured.  

Please note that Mitacs will honour all internships announced as part of its additional support to researchers affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.  

Mitacs continues to maintain good fiscal health and to operate as usual in all other parts of the country.  

They are continuing to work closely with the Ontario government to reach a solution that enables them to reopen applications and proceed with program delivery as soon as possible. Conversations are on-going and have been positive thus far.
