Mitacs Funding Update – Pause in Applications Ends

Mitacs assists research & development creation by connecting private sector and NGOs with post-secondary institutions to solve organizational challenges in Canada and internationally. Mitacs funds research, and creates job opportunities for students by matching funding from NGOs / the private sector.

Mitacs has received funding from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities for the 2022–23 fiscal year. Mitacs expects this funding to be officially announced shortly. After careful consideration, they have determined that they are ready to accept new submissions for the Accelerate, Elevate, and international programs (Globalink), ending the pause that has been in place since August 28, 2022. The Business Strategy Internship (BSI) program remains on pause. Information for the new Elevate call is included below.

Mitacs will begin accepting submissions again on November 3, 2022. New proposals submitted to Mitacs will be reviewed and approvals will be determined per their standard course of business, with funding start dates expected beginning from April 1, 2023. All award approvals are subject to funding availability.

Information for the upcoming Elevate call: Mitacs Elevate is a 2-year Post Doctoral Award that is funded by a Canadian partner organization and Mitacs. This two-year program develops fellows’ professional and research management skills as they lead a long-term research project with their partner organization. The program includes an exclusive professional development curriculum valued at $15,000.

Standard Call: 2-year fellowship with total research grant of $60,000 per year with professional development curriculum

  • Fellows: Receive $55,000 minimum stipend per year
  • Partner: Contributes $30,000 per year+HST ($15,000 per year for Indigenous owned partners/fellows)
  • Research cost: Up to $5,000 research cost per year

Thematic Call: Only for key priority sectors of agriculture and food, artificial intelligence, biomanufacturing, clean technology, entertainment and media, quantum science, or social innovation. 2-year fellowship with total research grant of $80,000 per year with professional development curriculum

  • Fellows: Receive $70,000 minimum stipend per year
  • Partner: Contributes $40,000 per year+HST ($20,000 per year for Indigenous owned partners/fellows)
  • Research cost: Up to $10,000 research cost per year

All Elevate submissions must be completed by Feb 8, 2023, 5 p.m. PT. Results will be announced June 2023. Projects must start by September 6, 2023.

APPLICATIONS: Mitacs applications require Western’s institutional signature and must be sent to researchoffice@uwo.ca along with a corresponding ROLA Proposal submission at least five business days before the deadline. If an application is accompanying an NSERC Alliance submission, more lead time is required to properly assess and assist with the submission.
